Villanova is surrounded by the municipalities of Alata and Ajaccio. Very close to the city center of this latter, the town has become "a suburb" of Ajaccio.
Villanova has existed since prehistoric times, as demonstrated by the presence of "Taffoni" (rock shelters). Celtiberians, Carthaginians and Romans stayed there.
In the 1980s, dozens of Roman gold coins were found on the shore of the Gulf of Lava: the famous "Lava treasure".
