A famous balanced boulder marks the summit
This summit in the island’s south is indeed a curiousity: an immense balanced rock – in the past an important landmark for ships at sea – perching precariously on a narrow boulder.
Starting point: car park by the church of Giannuccio, 467m, village 9.5km north of the coast road between Pianotolli and Roccapina.
Height difference: about 850m.
Grade: strenuous mountain walk along distinct paths, laborious climb to the summit over boulders, poorly-marked route at the end.
Refreshment and accommodation: bar-restaurant and hotels in Monacia, also campsite in Pianotolli-Caldarello.
Map: IGN 4254 OT (1:25.000).
