Polyphonic songs are among the most popular cultural traditions of Corsica. The Rencontre Polyphoniques de Calvi, started in 1989, was created in order to perpetuate this heritage and to network with other cultures who use polyphonic expression. The Rencontres, or meetings, are now one of the major events of the island. The polyphonic ensembles meet each year over a 5 day period with members from all around the world. (Mongolian, Inuit, Tibetan, south African, Cuban, Sardinia ...),in the heart of the citadel of Calvi. Different performances take place at St John the Baptist Cathedral, the Oratory of St Antoine and Place d'Armes.
