Long, but pleasant climb to the mountain hut at the foot of Capu a u Dente
The Refuge d’Ortu di u Piobbu, easily accessible, is one of Northern Corsica’s most beautiful mountain hut excursions. It offers walkers numerous possibilities for extending the walk and an ascent of the panoramic Monte Corona is highly recommended.
Starting point: Auberge de la Forêt de Bonifatu, 536m, 21km south of Calvi (pay and display car park).
Height difference: 1170m.
Grade: mostly pleasant route on a well-marked path, strenuous final ascent.
Refreshment and accommodation: Auberge de la Forêt (rooms and restaurant); Ortu mountain hut (bunks, basic facilities).
Alternatives: ascent to Monte Corona, 2144m (a good 1¼ hrs. one way, great view): behind the Ortu mountain hut, take the yellow-marked path to ascend to Bocca di Tartagine, 1852m, go right at the fork after ¼ hr., (40 mins., from here, a descent is possible into the Tartagine valley), then turn right for an easy ridge walk to the summit (40 mins.). Circular walk (2–3 days): Ortu mountain hut – Refuge de Carrozzu (GR 20, 6½ hrs., sometimes very steep) and then via Walk 14, return to the Auberge de la Forêt de Bonifatu.
