Rocky massif with all the archetypal features
Punta Velaco and Promontoire make up the central ramparts of the southern Bavella chain. These peaks offer marvellous views of the east coast between Porto-Vecchio and Aléria, as well as the craggy towers of the northern chain and Incudine.
Location: Zonza, 778m.
Starting point: Bavella pass, 1218m. Car parks at the top of the pass. Daily bus service from Porto-Vecchio (Walk 49).
Height difference: to Punta Velaco 300m, in total (including Promontoire and Trou de la Bombe) a good 600m.
Grade: mostly easy, but not always well-marked footpaths, exposed summit climb to Punta Velaco, easy sections of scrambling (Grade I).
Refreshment and accommodation: restaurants and auberge (bunks) in the Village de Bavella; hotels and campsite in Zonza.
