Marvellous panoramic peak in the green rolling landscape of ­Castagniccia
The highest and loveliest peak of the Castagniccia region offers you a marvellous panorama of the Corsican mountains and the verdant rolling slopes of the »Little Chestnut Wood« – the view stretches from Cinto to Rotondo and also includes the east coast as well as Cap Corse. To climb Monte San Petrone, the most convenient approach begins at the Col de Prato. For a more scenic and impressive walk, the paths beginning at Campana or Campodonico are highly recommended.
Locations: Morosaglia, La Porta and Piedicroce in upper Castagniccia.
Starting point: Col de Prato, 985m, top of the pass on the D71 between Piedicroce/La Porta and Morosaglia.
Height difference: 800m.
Grade: easy mountain hike on well-marked trails, easy scrambling at the end.
Refreshment and accommodation: snack bar at the starting point, restaurants and hotels in the valley.
Alternative: descent to Campana/Campodonico (1½–2hrs).
