Hike to a congenial panoramic peak with a raw diamond as a bonus
Monte Calva offers an excellent panoramic view which sweeps across Bavella, Incudine, Montagne de Cagna and the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio. However, the climb to the nearby Punta di u Diamante, a peak that truly does honour to its name, is a more exciting adventure in unforgettable scenery. This raw diamond may lack any sign of a cut or a polish, nevertheless the marvellous stony peak possesses a singular charm.
Locations: Zonza, centre for mountain climbers – located below the Bavella pass and Ospédale, beautifully-situated village above the coast Porto-Vecchio. Daily bus service from Porto-Vecchio (Walk 49).
Starting point: Bocca d’Illarta, 991m, a small mountain pass between Ospédale (10km) and Zonza (11.5km). Parking possible just beyond the mountain pass when approaching from Ospédale.
Height difference: a good 400m.
Grade: easy mountain walk via well-marked paths.
Refreshment and accommodation: restaurants in Ospédale, hotels and campsites in Zonza and Porto-Vecchio.
Tip: the hike can be extended with a detour to the nearby Piscia di Gallo.
