A treat for walking afficionados
The hiking path onto Monte Astu is described, without exaggeration, as one of the most beautiful on Corsica. The old path that starts in the delightful village of Lama, follows an extremely panoramic route lined with white and pink rock roses, up to the spectacularly located Refuge du Prunincu. The remaining ascent to the summit is not quite as attractive as the first part but, in compensation, you are rewarded with a fabulous view from the top.
Starting point: church in Lama, 502m, a pretty village in a scenic location above the Ponte Leccia – Ile-Rousse road (N 1197).
Height difference: D+1027m D-1027m
Grade: easy as far as the refuge, then sometimes more overgrown and more demanding, especially in poor visibility. Very little shade, so an early start is recommended (avoid this walk when it’s hot).
Refreshment and accommodation: bars, restaurants and gîtes in Lama; Camping Village de l’Ostriconi at the Ostriconi estuary.
Important tip: due to the danger of burning your skin on the fennel type plants at the side of the path (Peucedanum paniculatum), you are advised to wear long trousers on this walk (info at the tourist office or at www.rother.de, GeoLinks).
Map: IGN 4348 OT (1:25.000).
