Moltifao is located at 490 metres above sea level and belongs to the ancient parish of Caccia, of which it was the main town. This hilly village is crossed by the Asco river, which is the main tributary of the Golo. There are two bridges to cross the river and reach Moltifao: the Tesa bridge and the Ponte Vecchio – one of the three Genoese bridges that cross Moltifao.
This village is part of the Corsica regional nature park and here we can find the Tortoise’s village, a centre for the protection of the Hermann's tortoise – the only land tortoise living in the wild in France and whose species is in strong decline in Italy, France and Spain where there are only isolated populations in a critical situation because of man’s presence. The aim of this centre is to reintroduce Hermann's tortoises into the wild to ensure their survival in Corsica.
Moltifao is a typical Corsican village plenty of charm, which offers a breathtaking view! It is said that Nicoletta – whose original name is Nicole Grisoni – singer of the famous “Mamy Blues” was originally from Moltifao.
Inside the village you will find the parish church of the Annunciation (15th century), whose bell tower is one of the highest in Corsica. This church contains several works that are classified historical monuments, for example four paintings (The Last Supper, The Virgin with Child, Saint Anthony at the Feet of the Virgin and The Virgin at the Rosary with Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena), a varnished wooden statue of Christ and a marble statue of the Virgin with Child. Moltifao shares with the village of Castifao the copper mine called Saint-Augusti. Today the copper mine is completely abandoned, but you can still run into some galleries and shafts.
Moltifao is located at the crossroads between Bastia (59 km), Calvi (70 km) and Corte (31 km). This village is crossed by the D47 road and by the D247 one.
