On hiking paths through the villages of the Balagne region
The Balagne is one of Corsica’s oldest and most fertile agricultural regions. The route through this blessed landscape touches on numerous churches and monasteries as well as some lovely villages offering fine views which, despite the hurly-burly of the nearby coast, have managed to preserve a traditional character. A special treat is enjoyed by taking advantage of the approach using the local trains serving the "Tramways de Balagne" railway line connecting the coastal villages of Calvi, Lumio, Algajola and Ile-Rousse.
Starting point: Lumio, 185m, village in a superb location between Calvi and Algajola offering wonderful views. Train station Ondari-Arinella on the »Tramways de Balagne« railway line, 40 mins. on foot below the village (several trains a day).
Destination: Algajola, seaside resort with a long, sandy beach. Train station on the "Tramways de Balagne" railway line (several trains a day).
Height difference: 1000m.
Grade: for the most part, an easy walk, but stamina is required.
Refreshment: numerous bars and restaurants along the way.
Alternatives: the route can also be started in Algajola: from the train station, walk along the main road in the direction of Ile-Rousse; shortly afterwards, turn right along the minor road (D 551) leading to Aregno (1¼ hrs.). – From Corbara Monastery, a detour can be made via the artists’ village of Pigna (½ hr.) and from there along a country lane (on the right of the car park at the end of the village, then immediately turning off left) to Algajola (1¼ hrs.). – From the foot of Monte Sant’Angelo (1½ hrs.) or from Corbara (1¼ hrs.) descents possible to Ile-Rousse.
Maps: IGN 4149 OT, 4249 OT (1:25.000).
