Description
The heritage trail of Erbajolo is a good opportunity to discover the island's past. The starting point of this walk is located on the church square: the path is well maintained and well-marked: this walk is suitable for families with children. You must follow the village road until you reach the first stop of this walk, the old washhouse, which the children used as an open-air swimming pool up to twenty years ago.
After having taken a look at the village washhouse, you must continue walking until you reach the end of the village. You must take the path on the right and climb the concrete stairs. This part of the path is well shaded. Continue walking until you reach the chapel of St Martin (11th century), which is classified historical monument. Next to this chapel there is an old cemetery that you can visit – please stay quiet because it is still used by some inhabitants of Erbajolo.
Then you can continue walking towards the abandoned village of Casella, but the path becomes a little rockier. After only a minute's walk you must turn right towards Casella. The entrance to the village is marked by an iron cross – this village was burnt down in 1945 and only the church of Casella was spared by the fire. From the oven of Casella you must cross the field in front of you to take the path towards U Padule, where the oak trees give way to pines.
Continue walking towards the abandoned village of Cherchiglioni. You will run into a small house in bad state of maintenance. You must leave this small house behind you to reach the petra a u moru, which symbolises a victory of the Corsican army against the Barbary invaders (16th century): a legend says that Corsican soldiers beheaded the leader of the enemy army and carried his head at the tip of a spear...
To return to the village of Erbajolo, you must continue walking towards a sheepfold. Then follow the path for a few hundred metres until you reach the Foce – an aghja where wheat was threshed. Walk until you reach the chapel of St Christopher, which is located on the heights of the village, and then continue walking to return to the starting point.
