The lake of the Ospedale is located at the Ospedale pass (945 metres above sea level) near the village of Ospedale (which is part of the municipality of Porto-Vecchio). Please follow the road signs – you will have no problem to park your car.
Despite the natural and unspoiled beauty of the place, the lake of the Ospedale is an artificial basin, built in 1979 so as to always ensure the availability of water in the tourist resort of Porto Vecchio – which is the third city of Corsica in terms of population after Ajaccio and Bastia – and in the rest of the towns and villages in Southern Corsica.
Today this lake has become a site of touristic interest which is located in the heart of the forest of Ospedale, which owes its name to the refuge which hosted wandering shepherds.
Sport lovers will enjoy thanks to the acrobatic tree-climbing for teens and adults: there are a lot of different tree-climbing courses according to your level. There is also a 400-metre-long Via ferrata which is a climbing route which allows the climbers to secure themselves to metal fixtures and limit any fall.
In general the lake of the Ospedale is a perfect place to spend good times with friends and family, sheltered from the summer heat. Children will be happy to run into cows, pigs and other animals – pay attention because animals can be aggressive if they feel threatened.
Unfortunately, the lake is not navigable so bathing is not allowed, alternatively you can have a picnic in the shade of the trees or try one of the many hiking trails in the surrounding area. For example, you can take the path which will allow you to reach the Piscia di Gallu waterfall (1 hour and 30 minutes).
