The Arch of Corte is a granite sculpture located 1500 meters above sea level overlooking the upper Tavignano valley. The L'Arche trail is an essential hike in Central Corsica. It allows you to discover a jewel of nature, and a sumptuous mountain landscape.
Park in the rue Saint-Joseph car park below the Museum of Corsica, and head towards Tavignano, where clearly visible signs indicate the entrance to several hiking trails. Head towards the Arch and the Sheepfolds of Padule, which are signposted by a sign. This is a difficult hike: the climb is quite rough with a drop of more than 1000 meters on rocky ground. The first hour of walking consists of a steep climb without any plants to protect yourself from the sun. The route is clearly indicated by orange markings. You only need to follow these. At the first plateau, 1145 meters above sea level, you arrive opposite Monte Cardo and Monte Rotondo. The panorama towards Monte Rotondo and the Crests which separate the Tavignano and Restonica valleys is spectacular. Then the path winds along the mountain passing through an undergrowth before arriving at the second plateau, where on the left you can see the big cross of Corbaghiola with a panoramic view of the Cortenaise valley. The path continues towards the summits, through the numerous pines, before reaching a small wooden cross surrounded by Virgin Marys. After this part of the climb, which is the hardest, continue for about 15 minutes before discovering the Arch. It is strongly advised not to climb the arch!
The path continues to the sheepfolds of Padule before descending to Tavignano. It is advisable to take the same route as for the outward journey for the return, because it is easy to get lost by continuing towards the sheepfolds.
This hike is difficult, especially during the hottest months of the year.
Take plenty of water with you, leave during the coolest hours, and be in good physical condition for this hike.
