Peaceful and panoramic high route above the Aitone Valley
The Aitone forest is one of the most beautiful pine forests on the island. The route leads mostly through the scanty but welcome shade provided by towering laricio and black pine trees, making it a good choice for a hot summer day.
Location: Evisa, 829m.
Starting point: from the crossroads above Evisa drive 4.7km along the D 84 towards the Col de Verghio as far as the left-hand turning of the Piste du Salto (barrier, signpost »Sentier de la Sittelle«, 1160m), just between the »Village de vacances d’Aitone« and the Catagnone forestry house. Car park on the left.
Height difference: about 550m.
Grade: easy, although rather laborious mountain walk along a forestry road and footpath. The ascent to Capu â Scalella requires surefootedness.
Refreshment and accommodation: in Evisa restaurants, hotels and campsite.
Alternative: descent from Col de Cuccavera via the Refuge de Puscaghia into the Fango Valley.
Tip: visit the natural swimming pool Piscine d’Aitone (on the D 84 about 2km in the direction of Evisa, then on foot to the right descending to the stream (¼ hr.).
Map: IGN 4150 OT (1:25.000).
