The Sartène Citadel overlooks the valley and the Gulf of Rizzanese Valincu. During the Middle Ages it was an intersection of different grand estates of the island. The Manichedda is formed by narrow winding alleys paved with granite. The Pitraghju Manichedda was entirely surrounded by ramparts, although today only the watchtower remains. The entrance was through the roof of the former Palace of the Governors. The current City Hall has retained its old protective machicoulis where rocks or hot oil could be thrown down on enemies.
