Adventurous cascade walk through a delightful mountain landscape
This is certainly the most beautiful and adventurous cascade walk on the island. Time and time again, crystal-clear pools must be swum across, cascades scrambled round and gorges negotiated. If children are along, only the first stretch to the 3rd, at the very latest, the 5th cascade should be attempted, since numerous difficult sections lie ahead.
Locations: Solenzara, small seaside resort on the east coast. Zonza, 778m, centre for mountain climbers in the Massif de Bavella.
Starting point: bridge which spans the Polischellu stream, 480m, on the D268 between Col de Bavella (9.5km) and Bocca di Larone (3.5km). Parking possible on the road or in the large car park south of the bridge.
Height difference: 200m.
Grade: walk combining lots of scrambling and a swim. The path is usually distinct, in prominent places marked by cairns – nevertheless, from time to time, the path must be rediscovered. The necessary equipment includes swimwear and water sandals with straps (do not attempt it barefoot). Provisions and valuables must be carried in waterproof and sealed packs. Take note: attempt this hike only during stable and rain-free weather conditions as storms can turn the stream into a roaring torrent. In the case of an emergency, return to paths located high above the stream to follow a route back to the bridge.
Refreshment and accommodation: an auberge at the Col de Bavella, restaurants, hotels and campsites in Zonza and Solenzara.
Tip: those courageous enough can shorten the descent considerably by jumping down the up to 10m high cascades.
Map: IGN 4253 ET (1:25.000).
