Cliff walk with a fantastic view of Bonifacio
Founded on the southernmost tip of Corsica around 830, this little town is without doubt the most impressive on the island. The buildings perch on the very edge of white cliffs above the sea, crowded together in a precarious balancing act. The harbour bay (Marine) is watched over by the mighty walls and towers protecting the upper city (Haute Ville). Throughout the centuries, the fortress has withstood the forays of many invaders, but now, during the summer months, the place is overrun by hordes of tourists. Walking round about the old part of town is certainly a must for every visitor, but a quieter and most restful alternative is a stroll along the cliffs to Capu Pertusato.
Starting point: harbour of Bonifacio. Car parks at the harbour and in the upper town (follow the signs). Bus service to Porto-Vecchio and Ajaccio.
Height difference: 300m.
Grade: easy stroll. Be careful near the cliff’s edge – danger of falling.
Refreshment and accommodation: in Bonifacio.
Map: IGN 4255 OT (1:25.000).
