Bonifacio overlooks the sea, but the oldest houses are on the cliff above the harbor, out of sight of the Mediterranean. Peaceful today, Bonifacio has a history of intense belligerence. The citadel was once one of the most powerful on the Mediterranean. The upper town has retained its typical narrow medieval streets. The church of Santa Maria Maggiore built in the twelfth century is definitely worth a visit.
