Trip into the kingdom of the mouflon
There’s hardly another valley on Corsica that can boast such impressive mountain backdrops as the Manica valley. It extends directly along the foot of the mighty Cinto mountain chain and some beautiful cascades with correspondingly inviting pools are a great destination for less ambitious walkers – experienced, fit walkers will not want to miss out on the rest of the ascent to Capu Borba or even to Monte Cinto. One more tip: keep your eyes open above the forest boundary and with a bit of luck you might discover a few extremely shy mouflon that like to linger in this remote mountain region.
Location: Asco, 620m.
Starting point: Pont de Manica at the mouth of the Manica stream in the Stranciacone, 995m. On the Asco – Haut-Asco road, after 8km (a good 1km before Camping Monte Cinto).
Height difference: just under 1400m.
Grade: long and strenuous mountain walk that requires surefootedness and a good degree of fitness. The hiking path is somewhat overgrown in places.
Refreshment and accommodation: restaurants and hotels in Haut-Asco and Asco, campsites at the start of the Asco valley and 1km above on the road to Haut-Asco.
Linking tip: with Walk 72.
Map: IGN 4250 OT (1:25.000).
