Panoramic view of the endless sandy beaches on the east coast
The Belvédère de Cervione is an easily-reached panoramic overlook commanding a wonderful view of the east coast and revealing the boundless sweep of beaches lying between the lagoons of Biguglia and Diane. Twilight time leaves a singularly lasting impression as the sun sinks behind you into the deep blue sea and the horizon slowly disappears in the haze.
Starting point: main road in Cervione, 320m, main village of the Castagniccia.
Height difference: a good 450m.
Grade: easy walk, at times over rough ground between Belvédère de Cervione and Chapelle a Madonna.
Refreshment and accommodation: refreshments available in the tourist season by the chapel. Bars, restaurants and hotels in Cervione.
Alternative: circuit route via Santa-Maria-Poggio (a total of 5 hrs.): 200m past the chapel, a path turns off the track to the right (signpost for Castellu, orange waymarkers). After 50 mins., it reaches a wide, fern and gorse covered col, 1003m, between the huge Castellu (on the left) and the rather rocky Monte Negrine (on the right). From here, keep straight ahead, and at the fork 5 mins. later, turn right towards Funtana di Felicio (sign). The orange-marked trail crosses over the ridgeline ¼ hr. later and then forks 5 mins. after that (Col de Felicione). Here, straight on (right) towards Santa-Maria-Poggio (sign). 5 mins. later, the trail leads past a stone house to your left, and 15 mins. after that, turns right at a saddle in front of a little rocky peak. Not quite ½ hr. later, pass a little vantage point with a view of Poggio, and shortly afterward, a mighty boulder (turn right here). 20 mins. later, keep above the settlement and along the trail towards Cervione (sign), with steady up-and-down walking through the shady cork oak forest and heading back to Cervione (½ hr. on, keep straight ahead on a street leading to the main street).
