The village of Algajola is on an ancient site. It was founded by the Phoenicians, and then occupied by the Roman legion. But little evidence of that past life remains: some ruins of ramparts, a bastion and a watchtower. Despite reconstruction in the seventeenth century, the village still makes a very martial impression, softened by the addition of a charming fishing port (San Damianu) and a small church with a Genoese dome.
